Seven desperate jobseekers die in 32C heat as they take part in fitness test for South Africa's traffic police

South Africa Job seekers

Seven jobseekers died and  230 collapsed after 15,500 unemployed youths took part in a fitness test in the hope of securing one of 90 jobs with South Africa's traffic police.

The massive crowd of jobseekers took part in the deadly fitness test - which was held in a football stadium - after they each received text messages informing them they had been 'shortlisted' for the precious traffic police jobs.

They were told that they needed to complete a four kilometre (2.4 mile) jog within thirty minutes to meet the force's minimum fitness level requirement.
But by the time they started running late last Thursday afternoon, temperatures inside Pietermaritzburg's Harry Gwala football stadium had reached over 33 degrees Centigrade (91.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

Many of the desperate jobseekers had neither eaten nor drunk anything all day. They all had very limited access to drinking water.A total of 230 people collapsed from heat exhaustion and dehydration during the run. Of these, six died. A seventh man committed suicide by slitting his throat when he learnt he had not finished the race in time.
15,500 applicants turned out for the South African traffic police fitness test for 90 jobs
Among the dead was Lenny Nxumalo, 28-year-old father of two whose body was only discovered over four hours after he died when the vast crowd finally cleared out of the stadium. He had collapsed having completed the race with ten minutes to spare.

Yesterday his best friend Brian Ngcobo told the local The Witness newspaper: 'My friend was so determined to become a traffic officer that he ran his life out because he was such a dedicated person.'Another applicant, Lindelani Kubheka told the paper that he collapsed at the 'horribly disorganised' event after he ran on an empty stomach and without water.

'We were starving and needed water, but the venue is isolated from fast food outlets, so it was difficult for many of us to survive the scorching heat without water and food', he said after waking up in hospital on Friday.

The tragedy is just the latest example of the problems that can occur when South Africa's desperate youth - who face an effective unemployment rate of around 40 per cent - struggle to make successes of their lives.Government positions, such as those with the police force or army, are highly sought after as they are relatively well paid, have low entry criteria and because the application process positively discriminates in favour of blacks.

Previous 'mass job interviews' for jobs such as these have seen tens of thousands of desperately poor and ill-educated young people descend on a location in the hope of securing one of perhaps just a dozen positions.

In this latest example, over 150,000 people applied for the 90 jobs within the regional KwaZulu Natal traffic police department.Of these, 34,000 were sent text messages on Christmas Day telling them to report to the Harry Gwala stadium in two groups on Thursday and Friday.

More than 230 applicants were taken to hospital when they collapsed during the first day's fitness test. The politician responsible confirmed that 'more than 34,000 applicants qualified for the 90 trainee posts which were advertised', but that 'scores of them could not cope with the hot weather condition and collapsed.'

South Africa's Communist Party - which is in political alliance with the ruling African National Congress - demanded a full enquiry into the traffic police fitness test tragedy. And the opposition Inkatha Freedom Party has called on Willies Mchunu, the politician with ultimate responsibility for the debacle, to step down.

'What happened in Pietermaritzburg was a classic display of being power-drunk, to an extent treating ordinary suffering people as subhuman.
'No one in their right mind could in the first place short-list about 35,000 people for just 90 jobs,'IFP politician Blessed Gwala said.'

Fire burns Lagos Deputy Gov.'s residence

Lagos -  The police on Sunday said the fire at the residence of Mrs Adejoke Adefulire, Lagos State Deputy Governor, was a minor incident.

The Area Commander, Area `A' Command Lion Building, ACP Imohinmi Edgal, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the incident was quickly controlled.

"It was a minor fire which affected the Boys Quarters and was immediately put off with fire-extinguisher ," the police officer said. Edgal, however, attributed the fire to electrical fault, adding that nobody was harmed.

Stop Talking, Give Nigerians Reason to Trust You

Cheap talk won't do it but hard work with visible results:
“Mr. President has a manifesto to work with but has yet to fulfil his campaign promises. Rather than follow his manifesto, he removed subsidy on fuel last January and brought out problems.
“Now that he is aware that he’s slow in performance; let him deliver all his earlier promises first before making other ones.”
Said the National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Anthony Sani, while insisting that Nigerians would continue to hold Jonathan responsible for his promises and failure to fulfill them.

Similarly, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, challenged Jonathan to make public his plans for 2013. He said, “Now that the President has promised a new lease of life in 2013, he should tell us the areas he wants to focus on. Already, the 2013 budget is almost like that of 2012.

"The government still has to service our national and questionable debt and run the expensive bureaucratic government structure. He should tell us how he wants to perform the miracle.”

In the same vein, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) said government should focus on security, power and employment in 2013. Its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said:
“We will be more than happy, if he performs better next year. That will reduce the hardship being experienced by the masses and improve their standard of living. We will encourage and assist him to perform better.

“But the question is: Is there anything on ground for him to work with? If you want to commission a house next year, you must have acquired a piece of land by now. A better performance by him will be a pleasant surprise and we will welcome it.”

Recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had recently admitted his slow performance and promised a better performance in 2013.

Jonathan: Our Greatest Challenge Is Our Attitutude Not Corruption

President Goodluck Jonathan claimed today that Nigeria’s biggest challenge to good governance is not corruption, but the attitude of Nigerians.
Jonathan submitted this theory today in Yenagoa during a flowery tribute that he paid his former national security adviser, General Andrew Owoye Azazi, at Azazi’s burial.

President Jonathan stressed the need for attitudinal change among Nigerians for things to work and the country make progress.

His remark was provoked by the comment made by the Rt. Rev. Hyacinth Egbebo, the Catholic Bishop of Bomadi, who attributed the cause of accidents on Nigerian roads to bad roads created by corruption in government.

The president rejected the submission and instead retorted, “If Nigerians would change their attitude, you will realise that most of these issues being attributed to corruption are not caused by corruption.

“Recently, I met with officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps who told me that they had discovered that majority of the road accidents are recorded on good roads.

“So you can see it is not a matter of corruption, it is an issue of the people’s attitude.’’

Obama Signs Bill To Grant Nigerian Student U.S. Permanent Residency

Victor second from left, his doctor to his right, doctor's wife and the nun that's been taking care of him

President Barrack Obama just awarded a young Nigerian man with a very terrible genetic disease -Neurofibromatosis, permanent residence in the US and as such access to a US medical school. This hardly ever passes congress but because of his peculiar situation, it worked.

26th year old Victor Chukwueke came to the US eleven years ago to undergo treatment for massive face tumors and lived in Michigan on an expired visa. He graduated from a state university and wanted to attend a medical school but needed to have permanent residency for that to happen.

Private bills, which only applies to one person and mostly focus on immigration, are rarely approved. Victors is the only one to pass in US Congress in two years.

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes massive life-threatening tumors to the face

Stop Insulting Jonathan On Facebook, Twitter – N/Delta Youth Group

Nigerian youths have been called upon to desist from insulting the country’s President on Facebook and other social media.
The group, Niger Delta Youth Initiative for Positive Change, decried the penchant of some Nigerians in hurling abusive words towards President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that such attitude was uncommon in other countries.
Mr. David Ato, National Coordinator of the group, made this call while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Friday. Ato explained that President Jonathan meant well for Nigerians.
Ato stated that rather than insult the President, Nigerians, including youths, are supposed to support him so that he can deliver on his election promises.
While reminding abusers of the President that the economic and political problems facing the country were not created by him, Ato said, “The youth should desist from using abusive words against the President of the country. We should learn how to respect our leaders and we need to support him because we elected him into that office.
“Insulting him on Facebook and other social media is not the best. The truth is that Nigeria has been facing a lot of economic and political problems for a long time. President Jonathan did not create these problems.”
He, however, urged the President to begin to deliver on his election promises in 2013, adding that Nigerians were waiting anxiously to see the manifestation of his transformation agenda.

Suicide Bomber Attack Averted In FCT

Indications emerged, on Thursday, that authorities of the Nigerian Army Garrison Headquarters in Abuja, foiled a suicidal plot by members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to carry out a Christmas and New Year celebrations’ bombing in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
According to the Vanguard newspaper, two drums loaded with explosives, several sizes of cans, including those of vegetable oils and palm oil converted to Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs; about six AK-47 rifles and timing devices were recovered.
The Vanguard also reported that two persons, the landlord of the house where the high caliber explosives were recovered, and another man described as the middle man who facilitated the movement of the plotters and IEDS to the house, where the attack was to be coordinated, have been arrested by operatives of the Army Garrison Headquarters.
Also, a manhunt is also said to have been activated for the persons scheduled to carry out the bombings. Operatives, made up of Military Intelligence and counter-terrorism personnel, stormed the house located in Suleja area, following a tip-off at the dead of the night, but were unable to apprehend the two suicide bombers, who did not return from wherever they went on that day.

Colombian Drug Baron, Seven Nigerians Arrested By The NDLEA

A Colombian drug baron and seven Nigerians who specialise in the production of Methamphetamine (white, odourless, bitter crystalline powder) have been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, who made the disclosure on Thursday in Lagos at a news conference, expressed concern over the health and security implications of illegal production of the drug in Nigeria.
“Our investigation had shown that the Colombian expert on the production of methamphetamine, Mr Gonzelo Osorio a.k.a Fabian Arcila and Baez Benitez Milan was invited to establish three clandestine laboratories on a 38,000 dollars weekly contract.
“This is sad and worrisome. It is a clarion call on stakeholders to pay priority attention on this dangerous twist in our nation’s drug trade,” he said.
Giade said that narcotic investigators also arrested seven Nigerian members of the criminal gang who were now helping officials of the NDLEA in their investigation.
“The suspects are Gonzelo Osorio, Gabriel Obi, Anthony Ebi, Olisa Onyebuchukwu, Mickey Ezeokoli, Solomon Ogbonna and Chidi Efeagwazi.
“Twelve vehicles belonging to suspected members of the cartel have been confiscated.
“In addition, four houses have also been traced to the criminal group by the agency,” he said.
Giade said the undercover operation that led to the arrest of members of the gang commenced on Nov. 2011, when Osorio was contracted by a Nigerian drug syndicate to establish three methamphetamine production laboratories in different parts of the country.
He described the operation as ‘one of the best’ in terms of duration, expertise and professionalism handled by the agency.
“The first clandestine laboratory Osario established was situated at Majek area of Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, while another one was located at Nanka Village, near Awka in Anambra.
“The criminal gang was in the process of establishing the third laboratory when NDLEA officers apprehended them,” he said.
The NDLEA boss said that Osorio left Nigeria in December, 2011 and returned on May 30, 2012 with a false identity as a citizen of Paraguay with the name Baez Benitez Milan on his travel documents.
“Osario is regarded as an expert in the production of methamphetamine in his country and was hired on a contract of 38,000 dollars weekly by the drug cartel,” he said.
Giade said that while the operation was on going, a Nigerian suspect was apprehended in Lagos for using his residence for the production of methamphetamine.
He said that suspects involved in the criminal act were either ignorant of the lethal health hazard of their actions or blinded by selfish interest
“The use of Methamphetamine endangers public health.
“More worrisome is the security implication, due to the huge profit involved,” Giade said.
Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant available only on prescription but often abused by snorting. [NAN]

'We watched as our kids roast to death like goats' - couple who lost 5 children in fire

Despite the fact that some weeks have passed since the fire disaster that wiped out five children of Mr. & Mrs. Augustine Ikwuagwu on Comfort Oboh Street, Kirikiri Town, Lagos, its bitter memory still lingers. Indeed, the tragedy has been a nightmare to the couple. When Saturday Sun met with the couple recently, pain and agony have overwhelmed them, as they recounted their loss.

Speaking amid tears, Mrs Margaret Ikwuagwu, said her fine kids, Chukwuemeka (13), Ifeanyichukwu (10), Bright (8), Joy (6) and Victoria (4) were sleeping in the house when the incident started at 10pm. She said that all efforts to rescue the children failed. “I asked my children to go and sleep in the room while I was preparing to close shop for the day.

Then, shortly, someone ran to tell me that our house was on fire. I abandoned everything I was doing and ran down to the house. When I got there, the fire had already covered the whole place and I could not enter my room to rescue my children,” she said. Mrs Ikwuagwu explained that she cried for help, but no one came to her aid. “When I got there, I met a mammoth. My co-tenants were busy removing their children and property.

They started the rescue as soon as the fire broke out, but never bothered to inform me that our house was on fire. I tried to rescue our children, but I could not because the fire had covered our room. I heard the voices of my children shouting. But could not save the situation. I cried for help, but no one assisted me. “I forced myself inside the room when I heard my children crying for help, with the hope that I would bring out at least one or two, but I ended up being burnt by fire; so I ran out.” The woman revealed that as she was shouting, her husband arrived at the scene.

“When my husband arrived, we joined hands to rescue our children. He pushed the door, but the fire was too much; he tried to force himself through the window; yet he did not succeed. We called our children, but they did not answer us. When we tried and saw that there was no hope again, we fainted, having watched our five children, cash and other property ruined by fire. We were rushed to the hospital immediately and did not know what happened later,” she stated.

Mrs. Ikwuagwu stated that it was after some hours that she and her husband recovered from the shock. “When we recovered, we were asked to come to Kirikiri Police Station to make statement. Thereafter, we were asked to come and take our children for burial. So, we went to bury them at Trinity Cemetery, Olodi Apapa.” She revealed that before the fire disaster, her family had planned to travel home on December 22 for Christmas. “I do not know why this thing happened to us.

Why should our five children go like that? We were preparing to travel home on December 22 for Christmas. Now here we are. Where do we start and how far do I go from here? I know that it was not an ordinary fire. But, however, God will take control of the whole thing,” she lamented. Narrating what happened, Mr. Augustine Ikwuagwu, popularly known as Osuofia, said that when he arrived he tried his best to rescue the children, regretting that the fire had already taken over the entire compound.

He said: “On December 12, I went to my wife’s shop and saw my children sleeping and I asked my wife to take them home, which she did. We did not lock the children inside the house, as people are saying, rather. Our 12-year-old son, Chukwuemeka, took them home, and when the fire started, no one cared to call us and as a result, our children got burnt to death. We have three male and two female children and they died same day.

As it is, I have no house, no property and no child. People are saying that we locked the children inside the room and lighted a candle, but I am telling you that we did not lock them inside and we did not use candle at all; what we use was rechargeable lamp.” He also stated that the cause of the fire is yet to be known. “We are still surprised about how the fire started and up till this moment, we have not been able to know the cause of the fire. But God has the answer,” he stated. Mr. Ikwuagwu said the fact that they watched their five children suffer and died in the fire was the worst thing that has happened to him and his wife.

“I wanted to kill myself because I do not know where I am going from here. I do not think, I can cope because my entire life struggles are gone. After five children, we have decided not to bear children again. But now, we are starting again,” he lamented. He stated that since the incident, life has not been easy for his family, revealing that he and his wife are still receiving treatment in the hospital. “It has not been easy for us since then.

We have no child, shelter, clothes, money and property. Also, we have not recovered from the shock. So, anyone who knows what it takes to lose five children and everything should please assist us to come back to life. My wife’s spirit has gone down; she has been thinking of how to get another child,” Ikwuagwu lamented.

Covenant University expels 200 students

About 200 students may have been expelled by the authorities of Covenant University, Cannanland, Ota, Ogun State, recently for what was described as “disregard of paramount core values.”

Frustrated and angered by the development, some of the affected students who gave account of what happened battled emotions while narrating their situations to Saturday Vanguard recently. They however pleaded with the school authorities to tamper justice with mercy in order to save their future.

Newsmen investigation revealed that out of the figure, about 126 were expelled for not attending the ‘departure service’, meant to sign off from the school after the end of the Semester and Matriculation of students on November 30.  Five other students were thrown out for smoking while unconfirmed source said additional 60 got the same fate for violating other rules bordering on the University’s core values. A few others were given four weeks suspension for failure to sign the head count that was conducted a couple of weeks earlier.

A letter of expulsion signed by the Registrar, Ntia Ubong, a copy which was made available to Saturday Vanguard stated that the affected students contravened Chapter 1, section 30, page 40 of the 2010-2014 Student Handbook.

We gathered that the massive expulsion was predicated on the anger of the Chancellor, Bishop David Oyedepo who was said to have been infuriated after seeing students loitering around when they were supposed to be at the Chapel for the Departure Service.

He was said to have personally chased students to the Chapel and ordered for a search into all the halls and colleges to fish out those who did not attend the service.

Several attempts to get the school authorities comment on the issue proved abortive.  The Instituion’s Corporate Affairs Head, Mr Igban Emmaunel also refused to comment as calls pulled through to him were unanswered and text messages not replied.

How it happened
A few of the affected students gave account of what happened to Saturday Vanguard at different points.  The similar accounts go thus:  “On November 30, the last day of the semester, preceding our December break, there was also a Matriculation for the 100 level students; in fact some students had their last semester exams on that day, some of them finished around 3:00pm while the matriculation started around 8am. Some students retired to their rooms to relax while some engaged in some other activities jubilating the end of the semester.

“Some also got drinks from the matriculating students. Even as these were going on, some students who finished around 3pm retired to their halls. By 5pm, they announced that we should get prepared for the ‘Departure service’ which was to start by 8pm. Some students were already seeing their parents off while some of us were just trying to relax to get off the stress of the exams.

“Most of us hadn’t gotten through the tiredness of the sleepless nights of the exams; so, some us stayed back in our rooms. The departure service is usually a day before we go home and it is usually presided over by the Chancellor. Before the commencement of the service, they used to lock up the main doors of the halls so as to prevent cases of theft. I was not bothered since there were a lot of us in the hall. Some minutes past 8pm, they switched off the light and all of us in the hall went into our rooms. Because of the darkness and the cold, I slept off immediately.”

He continued: “The persistent knocks on the door woke me up and I realised that they had come to search for people who had not come to service. Before I realised what was going on, I found myself with other students numbering about 30. They took down our names and counted us to make sure that no one was omitted. They said the Chancellor was at the service and we refused to come. I heard them talking about other halls and they asked us to wait. I didn’t take it seriously because I never believed in my widest imagination that we would be expelled. We were later asked to go to our various halls.

“Some of those who went into hiding were lucky as they were not found. Shortly, those who went for the service returned and told us there was poor attendance at the Chapel and how students were diving in through the windows, scampering for seats. In fact, one narrated to us how the Chancellor jumped through the window to vent his anger on some students who had jumped in,” he stated.

Another expelled student also gave similar account of the incident. “I couldn’t go to the service because, I was not feeling well which was as a result of the stress of the exams we had just finished. After a while, I managed to go but I heard that they started driving people back around 7:30pm while the service was to start around 8pm. I was surprised because the rule was that you’ve got to be seated 15minutes to the service. Again, it was never made compulsory, but they tried to get students out of the halls to prevent cases of theft. So, because I was not feeling well, I went back to my room because I needed to rest for a while.

“I thought it was a  joke when they said we are in for expulsion because we failed to come for departure service. I have never done anything contrary to the school laws. I have never faced any panel before  and neither did I have any unpleasant case in my file. I never thought it was real until letters were handed to me the  following morning.”

Giving account of how letters were handed out to them, the visibly troubled student said: “By 6am, they announced the names of  those who were caught in halls and colleges. Usually after the departure service, one can sign out from there and go but because it ended late and no one could travel, students had to wait till the  following  morning. But the hall officer told those of us whose names were written down that if we leave, we should  be considered gone from the university forever. That gave us an insight into what was likely to come as punishment. By 7:45am, we were called once again to go downstairs for our letters. Those who collected theirs before mine were crying and I wondered what the punishment could be until I read the letter stating I was expelled from the university.”

At the Chapel
Another student who found his way to the Chapel also told Saturday Vanguard that while the Chancellor was being driven past, he noticed that students were loitering at about the time they were supposed to be seated at the chapel. He said that this apparently infuriated him and he alighted from his car and chased students to the chapel with knocks. “I saw him, alighted from his car and chased students to the chapel; I quickly found my way to the hall. Not quite long after, I saw students jumping in through the windows. It was a big commotion. Even the chancellor was going after those who jumped into the chapel. Later, he addressed the students saying  he was very disappointed by the behaviour that the students were not seated 15 minutes before the service.”

Another account had it that while the Education Secretary, Prof. Aize Obayan was addressing the students, the students were murmuring, then the  Chancellor immediately took to the microphone and said: “if I hear the voice of any student, the curse of the Lord shall fall upon that one.” The chapel immediately went dead silent.

Our source who was also late to the service stated that the Chancellor later directed that those students who did not come to the service would be purged out saying they did not belong  to the school. Our source stated that at the end of the service, he prayed for the students in the hall.

Another source in the school hinted that at that point, the Vice-chancellor pleaded on behalf of those who were absent but the Chancellor insisted they must be  purged from the school.

Our source told Saturday Vanguard  that  the Vice-Chancellor while addressing  the  students announced that a search would be carried out in all the halls and colleges to find out those who failed to attend the departure service, advising them to wait behind.

Saturday Vanguard investigation revealed that out of the figure, about 126 were  expelled for not attending  the ‘departure service’, five were thrown out for smoking marijuana, twenty-five final year students  and undisclosed number of  lower level students were caught violating rules bothering on the University’s core values.  We also gathered that a few others were given four weeks suspension for failure to sign the head count that was conducted a couple of weeks earlier. Some of  the students opined that  failure to sign the head count was even a greater offence which implied that the student was not in the school at the time of the exercise but yet got a four-week suspension.

The private  university is known for its strict rules and discipline such as not allowing the students to use mobile phones within the school’s premises, while it is mandatory for students to always bring their bible to the chapel.

Parents react
A few parents who volunteered information spoke to  us on condition of anonymity  fearing that their children might be victimised in case  the issue was resolved amicably. One of them  said  with bitterness that it is unacceptable, adding that the expulsion was not commensurate with the offence deemed to have been committed. He urged the school authorities to rescind  its decision adding that the future of  the students is at stake.

“For me, it is not acceptable. These students were  not given fair hearing. Expulsion should not  be a punishment for failure to attend service. We all agree, it is a Christian school but failure to attend church service could be due to a lot of reasons. I gathered that some of the students even finished their exams about 5pm that day. So, those people that finished at that time had barely three hours to prepare for the service. But stampeding them to congregate for service and then expelling those who did not come is a decision taken too far. For me, if there was poor attendance, I think the authorities have a responsibility. They have not been fair in putting the service so close to the examination. Even God will not do that.”

He however commended the Chancellor, Dr. Oyedepo on his vision towards the education of Nigeria children especially when the government institutions are failing, but urging him to tamper justice with mercy.

Another parent who was  afraid of the press noted that he was still studying  the situation and would not want to comment but noted that he was reliably informed that some group of parents made frantic efforts to meet with the Chancellor on the issue but without success. It was not clear the level of the efforts made. He further hinted that some students have not told their parents about their expulsion, still hoping that the issue would be resolved.

He lamented that his child had been having sleepless nights, going through mental torture  unjustifiably. “I agree that discipline must be instilled in the students but it should not be aimed at destroying the life of the students. Expulsion is too great a punishment for non attendance of a departure service, without even a warning especially when the students hitherto, had not been found wanting,” he stated.

What the Student Handbook says
The Covenant University Core values border on Spirituality, Possibility Mentality, Capacity Building, Integrity, Responsibility, Diligence and Sacrifice. On the spirituality aspect, it states:  “The Christian ethos underguard our activities and conducts at all time and every student of Covenant University is expected to exhibit character traits and dispositions of a Jesus-centered heritage. The Jesus – factor centered approach to all issues is non-negotiable and central in the pursuit of our mandate in raising a new generation of leaders and in the realization of  the objectives of our purpose.

To this extent therefore, students will be committed to maintaining a high level of spirituality and shall act in such manner as to facilitate their spiritual growth as well as work out ways to evolve and implement a spiritual development plan. Attendance at Chapel Services is a  compulsory part of students’ spiritual development where a bible and notebook are essential kits for the service. Students are expected to demonstrate a deep reverence for God at all  times.”

The school declines comment
Several attempts were made to get the school authorities comment on the issue. The institution’s Corporate/Public Affairs Officer, Mr Igban Emmanuel Kalu declined comment. At first, several calls were pulled through to him but he refused to pick his calls. When the reporter persisted, he later picked but said he was driving and could not answer any question. But few hours later, other calls pulled to him were unanswered. A text message was sent to his phone and up to the time of writing this report, he did not reply.

I’m not aware —Prof Julius Okojie, NUC Executive Secretary
The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof Julius Okojie said he has not been briefed on the matter.

Prof Okojie stated this during a telephone conversation Saturday Vanguard had with him a few days ago. “I am not aware of any expulsion by Covenant University; I will ask the school authorities. Right  now, I am not in Abuja, I left Abuja few days ago and until I return to Abuja and find out details about the matter, I cannot comment on it,” he said.

See Photo of Zamfara State Governor's Multimillion Naira Abuja Mansion

When will these politicians stop asking 'ordinary' Nigerians to make sacrifices?
This house said to be worth well over N500 million is the property of Governor Abdul Aziz Yari of Zamfara State, one of the poorest states in Nigeria. The magnificent edifice is situated on Owena Close, off Ethiopa Street in the Maitama district of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
.I don't know what to say.....

My question is: Nigerian political leaders why?

Mr & Mrs...in Nigeria for Christmas

Remember this couple? Their wedding at Ikoyi registry earlier this year made headlines in Nigeria. Mostly because he's a young Naija guy in his 20's and she's an European woman in her 50's or 60's. My paparazzi spotted them at The Palms, Lekki, a few hours ago shopping and generally having a good time. Good to see they are still going strong :-)

70-Year-Old Blind Woman Burnt To Death In Aba On Christmas Day

The commercial city of Aba, Abia State was thrown into a heavy pandemonium on Christmas day following the mysterious d***th of an old blind woman in a fire outbreak.

The incident, which occoured in Ogbor Hills, a suburb of the city was said to have started from one of the back rooms of one of the building located at 64/95 Ikot Ekpene Road at about 4.45pm when most residents had gone out for xmas celebrations.

Sources said the inferno was suspected to have been caused by electrical spark.

It was learnt that the blind victim who was in her early 70s was living with one of her daughters when the fire broke out.

Unfortunately, the fire started when the daughter had gone out to a nearby market to purchase food items.

It was gathered that when the daughter and other co-tenants returned, they could not see the woman in the razed apartment and thought she might have narrowly escaped or rescued by other residents but they never knew that their mother and grandmother was burnt to death in the ragging inferno until the following day when they were clearing the debris and found her roasted body.

Speaking on the tragic incident, one of the occupants of the razed building, Chiemela Amaji who also lost fortunes to the disaster said the she was away to see a friend when the fire broke out.

According to the still shocked man, his wife who was sleeping when the fire broke out narrowly escaped been burnt to death as a result of intervention from other neighbours who woke her up before the fire spread to their room.

DailyPost gathered that state Fire Service workers could not help the situation when they eventually arrived as the inferno had already caused serious havocs.

LAGOS EXPLOSION:10 year old boy confirmed d***d, 40 injured, 8 vehicles destroyed.

**I’m finished, says trader who lost warehouse of generators.

The day after Christmas was meant for exchange of gifts among friends and families, but that was not to be for some Lagos residents yesterday who woke up to the defeaning sound of explosions caused by fire-crackers. There were tears, sorrow and anguish. The scene was Ojo Giwa and Okoya streets in Jankara area of Lagos Island. Goods and property worth millions of Naira were lost to the inferno. By the time the smoke subsided, one person was feared dead, 40 people were injured, five houses got burnt, five others and eight vehicles were destroyed.

There were rumours that the dreaded Islamist sect, Boko Haram, had made good its threat to attack Lagos until the state government doused the tension, saying, the explosion was caused by fire-crackers. The fire affected buildings on Ojo Giwa and Okoya streets. Soldiers, policemen, Nigerian Security and Civil defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives had a hectic time controlling the crowd that stormed the scene. The inferno which started from house No. 45, Ojo-Giwa Street, a Three-storey building, was triggered off by firecrackers warehouse in one of the shops in the building. Mr Segun Atolagbe, one of the shop owners explained how the fire started: “My shop was in 47 Ojo Giwa Street.

I sell fans and my partner sells generators. I was in the shop attending to some customers this morning (yesterday) when we saw some people passing through the street. It was around 9:00 a.m. As they were going, they were throwing up fireworks. They threw one up and it landed on the top floor of the houses. “The top floor is a warehouse where fire-crackers were stored. Then the crackers started exploding. Initially, we were hearing minor explosions from the top floor.

At a time, there was a deafening explosion. All of us downstairs thought it was a bomb blast. We all scampered for safety. Later, we came to retrieve some of our goods. Many of the shops were not opened because we are in the festive season. I have more than N2 million worth of goods in my shop. The whole building contained shops,” he said. Mr Casmir Emedike has his shop at No. 47. He stocked the place with decorative items such as artwork frames, flower vases, wall clocks and others. He got to his shop and discovered that everything got burnt.

“I was at home in Apapa when I was told about the fire. When I got here, I could not go near my shop because it has been burnt down. I have lost almost N78 million to the fire,” he lamented. Another trader, Mr. Taye Mogaji, who sells generators and grinding machines, disclosed that he took delivery of goods worth more than N5 million. According to him, he had N1.5 million worth of goods in his store before he took the new delivery. Many of the generators were burnt, electric motors, alternators, grinding machines and so on. We could not pick anything from the shop.” Mogaji recalled that the traders on Ojo Giwa Street had complained bitterly about the firecrackers before the incident: “We have been complaining that any day fire-crackers explode, they would wreak monumental havoc.

See President Jonathan`s Christmas Message To Nigerians

Dear friends,

I want to seize this opportunity to

wish you and your loved ones a
merry Christmas and a happy
New Year in advance.

I feel the pains of Nigerians and

that is why this yuletide period I
have personally instructed that
our roads should be worked on
to enable you and your loved
ones travel safely for the holidays
knowing that this season brings
with it the highest volume of
traveler traffic of the year.

This administration also made

sure that most of our airports
received a facelift with the
terminals rehabilitated and the
runways upgraded.
Not done, we ensured that for the
first time in decades, the cross
country services (Lagos to Kano
with stops in cities along the
route) of the Nigerian Railway
Corporation (NRC) were revived
just prior to the holidays to
provide Nigerian masses with an
inexpensive alternative to road
and air transportation.
Nigerians traveled on these
coaches which took them from
Lagos to Kano beginning on
Friday the 21st of December,
2012 at a very affordable rate of
1,500 Naira, with stops at many
cities along the route.

This administration also took

steps to increase power
generation by remaining true to
the Timelines of the Roadmap to
Power Sector Reforms which has
seen history made on Friday the
21st of December 2012, when
Nigeria’s power generation hit an
all time high of just over 4,500
MW which I know is still not good
enough, but which nevertheless
is an improvement of what we
met on ground to the end that as
many Nigerians as possible can
celebrate the holidays with power
in our homes and communities.

I reaffirm to you that, God willing,

Nigeria will witness a better year
in the coming year.
Once again, on behalf of my
family and I and the government
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,

I, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan,

wishes every Nigerian a very
Merry Christmas and a most
prosperous and Happy New Year.

Lagos State Government demolish N100million PFMI church

There was uproar at Afero village on Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos, as officials of the Lagos State Government demolished a sprawling church, the Pure Fire Miracles Ministries International (PFMI) in a controversial manner.

Lagos Task Force men, accompanied by officials from the Ministry for Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPPUD), stormed the church to enforce an eviction ordered by the government.

The ministry demolished the building over allegation that there was no approval for the construction of the building.

The church structures, which officials of the church said had gulped over N100 million, were erected on a 10-acre land and comprised six auditoriums, offices, residential buildings and buildings for other uses.

The church was having its annual convention with worshippers from 12 foreign countries in attendant. The more than 10,000 worshippers that included old and pregnant women, children and men, were said to a have been at a loss on why the building was demolished when the church was holding its convention.

The bulldozers from the taskforce moved in immediately and three of the buildings were brought down before the traditional ruler of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun, Chairman of Epe Local Government and other prominent citizens in the community intervened to stop the exercise.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, alleged that there was no approval for the church building and that notices had been served on the church to vacate the land, claiming that the land fell within the proposed Lekki International Airport and, therefore, could not have been approved for such development.

“We have served them quit notices since 2011 and another one was served on them in November, which they didn’t comply with, said Ayinde, adding that the church officials were being economical with truth.

The church disputed the claims by government that it had no approval, while a document from the legal adviser to the church’s pastor, Enoch Idowu Aminu, Messrs Ibrahim A. Shittu and Co., of Probono Chamber, showed that the land was purchased from Ikujenya Okanlawon Ikuforiji Chieftaincy Family, with the address at 3, Ikujenya Street, Bado Oke, Epe, Lagos State, on 21 May, 2010.

The purchase, according to the cleric, was embarked upon as a result of the information contained in the Lagos State of Nigeria Official Gazette, No. 29, Volume No 27, September 1, 1994.
In page 274 of the gazette, it has as follows: Description- Afero Village: “All that parcel of land in Afero in Eti-Osa Local Government of Lagos State of Nigeria containing approximately area of 28.52 hectares, the boundaries of which are described below,” stated the bearings, length of metres and the co-ordinate measurements, among others, indicated that the land was excised and properly belonged to the original owner(s).
“Besides, we applied for regularisation of land title through Law Title International, the appointed Consultant to the Lagos State Government on Land Regularisation, on which there was no objection.
This was confirmed in the official receipt of payment, dated 23 November, 2011, in the sum of N1.64 million. The church claimed that the government lied by saying that the property fell within the proposed airport as other buildings in the same vicinity were not demolished.

Reacting to the demolition, the worshippers found it disheartening that the demolition was executed amid threats and intimidations by government officials
Pastors Johnson Samuel Ani from Burkina Faso, Tamomo Jose, from Benin Republic, David Amevoi from Ghana, Richmondson Shekesesay, from Sierra Leone, Mawu from Manuzikpi, Togo, all felt that the manner of the demolition was not properly handled.

Ten years old Camerounian girl, Miracle Bosco, was shocked when the building was pulled down, saying, “why is it that police came and destroy the house of God? I am sad because all the money our parents spent here has become a waste. Please, help us to beg the Governor to stop this demolition. God is not happy and I am not happy.”

Chief Isaac Shigbata, a Nigerian born pastor, residing, denounced the manner at which security agents invaded the church without any consideration for the safety of the people.
“What happened on that fateful day was not of any credit to any government. Laws were made for man and not the other way round. No matter what may be the situation, the timing was not only bad, but rather, the action was capable of breaching security. And not at this time that Nigeria, as a country is battling religious extremism in some parts of the country’. According to Pastor David Bangali from Liberia, “Nigeria is a country that many African countries are looking unto for guidance, especially, Lagos State. But activities of security agents last week was not palatable at all.”
