Drogba signs contract deal with Shanghai Shenhua; becomes China’s most expensive football player

Chelsea star player, Didier Drogba has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Chinese football club, Shanghai Shenhua.

The deal is reportedly worth €12 million-a-year and will make him the most expensive player in the Chinese Super League. This means Drogba will make 250,000 euros a week, far surpassing his former salary at Chelsea FC.

Drogba’s debut is slated for July 14 against Beijing Guoan.

The Ivorian icon chose Shanghai, despite receiving interest from Real Madrid, Anzhi, Marseille and Tottenham.

AT LAST:Goalline technology gets its first outing... is this the start of the future?

Goalline technology was given its first live test on Wednesday night in the Hampshire FA Senior Cup final between AFC Totton and Eastleigh FC. Hosted at Premier League new boys Southampton's St. Mary's Stadium, the Hawk-Eye technology was put through its paces. 

Although the system was being tested, the referee had no access to its results - they were being monitored by an independent tester who did not communicate them to the official, Colin Lymer.

Eastleigh ran out 2-0 winners and the first goalscorer, Chris Flood, proudly tweeted after the game: 'I think I made history tonight. First ever goal to be scored in the UK with goal line technology.' The second goal was bundled home by Mitchell Nelson, but there was some question about whether his effort had gone in. 

The referee awarded the goal without the help of goalline technology, but it will be intriguing to find out Hawk-Eye's opinion on the matter. This is the start of a process which could see the technology introduced at the top level by halfway through the 2012-13 season.

When Carlos Tevez lifted a banner proclaiming "R.I.P. Fergie" during a victory parade marking a 44-year wait for an English league title, it brought into sharp focus comments by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson back in 2009.

"Not in my lifetime," the Scot said when asked if his team would ever be underdogs against City. United may not have been underdogs this season, but certainly had to play second fiddle as City won both league derby clashes and snatched the Premier League crown from Ferguson's team in the final minutes of the campaign, if only by the narrowest of margins.

Manchester City's stars celebrated snatching the Barclays Premier League title with a tour round the city's streets on Monday night. Roberto Mancini and his players and staff gathered at Albert Square to be greeted by thousands of fans.

 From there, it is a 1.8-mile journey through the city that ends in Corporation Street. The streets are lined with blue-shirted supporters revelling in their first title since 1968.

Williams runs riot against world No 1 Azarenka

Serena Williams overpowered the top-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-3 to win the Madrid Open on Sunday.

 In a clash of two of the tour's heaviest hitters, Williams battered Azarenka around the new blue-clay court with her big serve and vicious return to take the first four games and never look back. Williams served 14 aces on her way to avenging her only loss in six previous meetings with Azarenka when she fell to the Belarusian in the 2009 final in Miami.

It was the 30-year-old Williams' 41st title and second of the season as she remained unbeaten in her last 13 matches on clay. The loss ended Azarenka's run of winning her last four tournaments. 

'I can still do better,' Williams said when asked if she had found her best form following her return from a yearlong absence due to illness in 2011. 'This is really good. I have been working hard. I had some tough battles and really unfortunate circumstances so I really love this.'
