Army destroys over 2000 illegal refineries in Edo, Delta


The Army has destroyed over 2000 illegal refineries in Edo and Delta States, Brigade Commander of the 4 Mechanised Brigade,  Brigadier General Obi Abel  Umahi, said yesterday.Parading suspected illegal oil bunkerers, armed robbers and kidnappers in Benin, Umahi said the Brigade also destroyed over 200 boats carrying condensed oil to the neighbouring countries. 

The Brigade commander also paraded over 45 criminals made up of ex militants, police and Army personnel, who have been involved in illegal bunkering, armed robbery and kidnapping.
He however added that the true identities of the ex police men and ex soldiers will be determined after a thorough investigation.
He said items recovered from the suspects include AK 47 riffles, pump action, anti aircraft missile, over 200 cartridges of different sizes among others. Umahi thanked the Chief of Army Staff, the governors of Edo and Delta State and other security agencies, particularly the State Security Services (SSS) for their support. Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who was present, thanked the military for helping to combat crime in the state, pointing out that the police cannot do it alone.
The governor, who expressed shock over the numbers of weapons recovered from the suspects, said, “To have peace in the state, especially during the forthcoming elections, we must keep weapons out of circulation”.
